Adult Coloring? Why We Love It

As a child, my personal favorite coloring book was Barbie themed; I spent hours upon hours coloring Barbie's dresses and shoes and dream-houses. Coloring was such a gigantic part of my childhood - of all of our childhoods. From the coloring pages we got at restaurants to the books we received for Christmas, coloring was an ever present element of life. But then we grew up. We moved away from coloring books. We became adults and we threw our coloring books in drawers, never to be seen or heard from again...

Or so we thought.

Lately, coloring for adults has become HUGE. Adult coloring books are all the rage right now, and this is one trend we can get behind! Why should you re-adopt your childhood hobby? One reason: coloring is highly therapeutic! Here are some of the biggest benefits of coloring:

Adult Coloring is Relaxing!

Actually, the mindset you enter when coloring is similar to meditation! When we're coloring, our brains take a break; coloring becomes your brains primary focus and pushes other thoughts out of your head. This has been shown to reduce levels of anxiety and stress!

Adult Coloring Increases Focus and Coordination

Because coloring requires a lot of attention, it actually builds up your ability to focus! It's also a precision based activity, so it can make you more coordinated!

Anyone Can Do It

Coloring is a no pressure activity! It seems everything and everyone puts expectations on us; coloring is one of the few activities that does not! Anyone, artistic or not, can color and enjoy the benefits.

It's Positive

There's nothing negative about coloring. The bright colored pencils and positive images on the coloring pages can put you in a better, more optimistic mood.

During chemo, coloring can be an invaluable resource. It can help you keep your mind set on positivity during difficult times as well as provide a fun, calming pastime while waiting for treatments.

Posting coloring pages is such a nice thing to do. I have some books, but it is nice to be able to choose what I want to print and color. I colored a lot as a child. Made the days pass faster. My mother, being a single parent, left me with my very mean grandmother during the day while she worked. Coloring was my escape and kept me "out of trouble". I loved coloring with my children, and now my grandchildren. It is true. Coloring is a healing art which calms you and releases you from the horrors of cancer. I am an ovarian cancer, stage 4, survivor. But the thoughts are still in the back of my mind that cancer can come back. To your readers, when you need a pity party, and we have all experienced them, try coloring instead. Thanks, Headcovers Unlimited, for being there for us.
