Why Are My Eyelashes Falling Out?

There are many different reasons for fragile eyelash hairs to thin, break or fall out. Some of these causes are unavoidable, however there are several things that you can do to help ease the frustration of losing your eyelashes.

Aging and the Natural Hair Cycle:

Eyelashes are subject to your natural hair cycle, just like the hair on your head. Over time, your lashes will naturally fall out and grow back in over and over again. With time and age however, the lashes may appear thinner than they once were.

Abrasive Actions:

Natural wear and tear causes eyelashes to thin over time. Rubbing and tugging can cause breakage that can be easily hidden by makeup. However, misusing mascara, eyeliner, or other eye makeup can cause further damage to your lashes. To decrease lash damage, avoid leaving eye makeup on overnight or combing through dried mascara clumps. Always remove makeup with a gentle cleanser and avoid rubbing.

Hormones, Vitamin Deficiencies and Infections:

Some people experience thinning lashes due to vitamin deficiencies, hormone imbalances, or common eye infections such as pink eye. Medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism or HIV/AIDS can also contribute to eyelash thinning or eyelash loss over time. Your doctor can help determine proper treatment of these issues, which may help decrease the thinning, or stop it altogether.

Chemotherapy Treatments:

While undergoing chemotherapy treatment, many people lose their hair. This can include the eyelashes. Eyelashes will often grow back with time as new hair cycles occur after treatment has ended.

False Eyelashes:

If eyelashes do not regenerate, there are a myriad of options for natural looking eyelash replacement. False eyelashes can be an easy and natural looking option to help disguise eyelash loss. The eyelashes can be applied in an entire strip across the lash line, or individually. Strip eyelashes are the easiest to apply, as they simply attach at the lash line with a single placement.

Natural looking false eyelashes are often the best option. You can find a large variety of natural looking eyelashes here. Here are some of our favorite products for making your lashes look naturally full.
