How Much Do Wigs Cost?
What wigs cost, at Headcovers and everywhere else, what makes one wig cost more than another, and where your money does the most. Plus ways to pay less, free included.
You can find a wig you love at a price you can live with.
Wig shopping can stir up a whole mix of emotions: frustration, curiosity, confusion, relief. As with any new situation, questions come up, and one of the biggest is how much a wig should cost. How much is too much? Or too little? And what exactly should you be looking for?
Across the market, wigs run from about $30 to several thousand dollars. Our own prices come from the wigs our customers buy. Alongside them: what you'll find elsewhere, and the handful of things that move a wig up or down that range.
If paying for a wig is the hard part right now, skip to insurance and free wigs, or call us at 1-800-264-4287 and a person will talk the options through with you.
what wigs cost at headcovers
Seven in ten of the wigs our customers buy cost under $250. Synthetic wigs typically cost between $145 and $275, and the cap decides where a wig lands. A few cost less and some cost more, and every wig's own page shows its current price. Typical prices of the full wigs our customers bought, from the least expensive to the most:
| wig | typical price |
|---|---|
| synthetic, basic cap | About $140 to $180 |
| synthetic with a lace front | About $200 to $265 |
| synthetic with a monofilament top | About $240 to $330 |
| synthetic with a lace front and monofilament top | About $310 to $440 |
| human hair | About $570 to $1,550, and up |

what wigs cost everywhere else
Wigs are sold everywhere from online marketplaces to outlet stores to wig shops, and prices across the market run from about $30 to several thousand dollars. When a wig costs much less in one place, it helps to know why.
online marketplaces
You'll find the lowest prices on large online marketplaces. Many of those are budget wigs, with a shinier fiber that looks more like a wig and a basic cap, priced to match.
outlet and discount wigs
Outlet prices can come from overstock or discontinued styles and colors, but many outlet wigs are refurbished. They are often returns that someone wore, then washed and put back on the shelf, and a wig that has been worn can't be resold as new. Here too, you get what you pay for. If a wig costs far less than the same style does elsewhere, check whether the listing says new or refurbished, and check the return policy, before you buy.
designer wigs and authorized retailers
If you find a designer wig, from a brand like Jon Renau, Raquel Welch or Ellen Wille, for far less than it usually sells for, it may be a knockoff or a refurbished return. Before you buy, look on the brand's own website. Many brands list the retailers they have authorized to sell their wigs, and a seller on that list is selling you the real thing. Headcovers is an authorized retailer for every brand we carry.
online or in a shop
Wigs bought online often cost less than wigs bought in a shop, because a shop's price usually includes in-person service. Compare the final price, the return policy and the help that comes with the wig. Our guide to buying a wig online shows how to tell a retailer you can trust, and help still comes with it here: send us a cutting of your hair and we will match your color for free.
what changes the price
A wig is priced a lot like a car. The basic model gets you where you're going, and every feature you add costs a little more.
Wig prices vary with a few things: the hair the wig is made from, how long it is, and the cap the hair is attached to.
the hair
- Synthetic is the least pricey and the easiest to manage. It comes in grades too, and the grade affects the price.
- Heat friendly synthetic lets you change your style with heat tools on a low setting. It can frizz, sometimes more than standard synthetic.
- Human hair is the most costly. The supply is limited, and there are grades of human hair, each with its own price: Remy human hair, sorted so the strands all run the same direction, costs more than non-Remy. Human hair also takes more upkeep day to day, with heat tools and styling products to keep frizz down.
- Length plays a part. Longer hair usually means a higher price, especially in human hair.
the cap
Among synthetic wigs, the cap and its features change the price the most. Basic caps, classic and open, are mostly machine made, so they cost the least. Monofilament, lace front and hand-tied caps cost more because part of each one is made by hand.
- Lace front. A realistic hairline, with the look of hair growing from your skin.
- Monofilament top. Partly hand tied, so the hair looks like it grows from your scalp and you can change your part.
- Double monofilament. Like a monofilament top, but softer and gentler against the scalp.
- Hand-tied cap. The most expensive. It gives the look of natural growth, lets you move your part, and fits softly and flexibly.
On our synthetic wigs, each feature adds a step. Compared with a basic cap at around $150, the lace front wigs our customers bought typically cost about $65 more, the monofilament tops about $110 more, and wigs with both about $195 more.
why human hair wigs cost more
Our full human hair wigs typically cost about $570 to $1,550 and up, against about $145 to $275 for synthetic. The money goes into four things.
- The hair itself. Human hair is limited in supply, and it has to be collected, sorted and processed before it can become a wig. Remy hair takes extra sorting so the strands all run the same direction, which adds to the cost.
- The grade. Low-grade human hair is heavily processed for inexpensive fashion wigs and often doesn't feel like real hair. Human-synthetic blends can cost less than comparable 100% human hair wigs.
- The cap. Hand-tied caps take more handwork, which adds to the price.
- The length. A longer wig uses more hair, and in human hair that shows in the price.
Whether it's worth it depends on how you'll wear it. Our human hair vs synthetic guide weighs the two side by side.
where your money does the most
As with most purchases in life, the old saying holds for wigs: you get what you pay for.
what a budget wig gets you
A lower-priced wig is usually made with a less refined fiber, and you can see it in the shine: the hair catches more light than natural hair does, so it can look more like a wig. Spending more buys a softer, more natural finish, and a cap that looks like your own part and hairline.
There is no right amount to spend on a wig. What matters is how you'll wear it and what feels right to spend. Whatever that is, every wig we carry is one we would want to wear ourselves.
if your budget has a limit
Put that money into cap construction first, and into the features you'll use: a lace front if you wear your hair back off your face, a monofilament top if you like to move your part. Those are what make a part and a hairline look like your own, and even with both, a synthetic wig typically stays under about $440, well below what human hair costs.
when a price is too good to be true
If you find a wig with Remy human hair and a hand-tied cap with a lace front for $50, there's a mighty big chance it isn't all it's cracked up to be. A Remy human hair wig can cost well over $700, and with a hand-tied cap and lace front you may be looking at well over $1,000.
Browse our synthetic wigs, or go straight to monofilament wigs if a natural-looking part matters most to you.
ways to have hair for less
“I can’t pay much but I can pay some”a reader, in a comment on our earlier wig price guide
If that's where you are, a full wig isn't the only way to have hair. Depending on how much hair you've lost, one of these may give you the look you want for less. Some women also find these more comfortable, every day or as a break from their wig.
You don't have to choose a wig today. A soft hat or a halo can carry you for now, and the wigs will still be here when you're ready.
A few options to consider:
Ultimate Fringe bangs
Bangs that Velcro inside any hat, turban or scarf, or onto the Instant Hair headband, so hair shows at the front. Under $20; headwear sold separately.
shop bangs →Cardani short halo
Short hair at the sides and back, worn under a hat. Around $45, plus the hat.
shop the short halo →Cardani classic bob halo
A bob at the sides and back under any hat. Around $45, plus the hat.
shop the bob halo →Cardani long halo with bangs
Long hair at the sides and back, with detachable bangs for the front. Around $45, plus the hat.
shop the long halo →Hannah headband wig
Full coverage on a headband, with a scarf or headband worn over the top. Around $70.
shop headband wigs →Cardani bob baseball cap with hair
The cap and the hair in one piece. Our baseball caps with hair run about $95 to $105.
shop the cap →Hats
Some women find a soft hat more comfortable than hair of any kind, and a relief to wear. Ours are made for heads with no hair to hold them on.
shop hats →See every style in hats with hair, halos and bangs and headband wigs.
paying for your wig
Before you buy, ask your insurer whether your plan covers a wig for medical hair loss. Some plans cover part or all of the cost. Most companies ask you to pay for your wig up front, so ask your insurer what paperwork they need and how reimbursement works.
insurance
Insurers often list a wig for medical hair loss as a cranial prosthesis. Our wig insurance guide covers how to ask, what to send and which states require coverage, and we can give you an invoice for your claim.
ways to save
Keep an eye out for promotions and discounted shipping. Standard shipping is free on qualifying orders over $75 with code HCU75, and our current offers list what's on right now.
Buying for someone you love? A gift certificate lets her choose the wig, or the hat, herself.
how long one wig lasts you
With chemotherapy that causes hair loss, hair usually starts to fall out two to four weeks after treatment begins, and the shedding can go on for a few weeks after treatment ends.1 Regrowth typically comes three to six months after the last treatment.1 How long you wear a wig depends on your treatment, how your hair grows back and when you feel ready to go without one. If your hair loss is long term, a wig becomes part of everyday life, so how long it lasts and how you care for it matter even more.
In our experience, a synthetic wig worn most days lasts around four to six months, and a human hair wig cared for well lasts about a year, sometimes longer. Depending on how long your treatment runs, one wig may carry you all the way through.
the care products it needs
The right products help a wig last, so keep them in mind when you add up your total. The basics are a shampoo and conditioner made for your wig's fiber, human hair or synthetic, and a stand. The rest depends on how you wear it.
- Shampoo and conditioner. Brandywine wig shampoo and Brandywine wig conditioner are made for wigs.
- A wig stand. The Cardani collapsible tripod stand keeps your wig's shape between wears.
- Styling products, if you style it. Choose the ones for your fiber from our wig care and accessories.
- A wig cap and a comb, as you need them. A wig cap if you find one more comfortable under the wig, and a wig lift comb for styling.
If you'd like a starter set, the Essentials kit brings the basics together.
keeping your wig fresh
Wearing scarves or hats in your downtime makes your wig last longer. Wash it only when it needs it, since over-washing wears a wig out over time. Every six to eight wears is usually right, and if you haven't sweated much and the edges don't feel oily, you can most likely wait. Our synthetic wig care guide walks through the wash.
questions about wig prices
how much does a good wig cost?
Seven in ten of the wigs our customers buy cost under $250. Synthetic wigs typically cost $145 to $275: on a basic cap about $140 to $180, with a lace front about $200 to $265, with a monofilament top about $240 to $330, and with both about $310 to $440. Full human hair wigs typically run from about $570 to $1,550 and up.
what do you get with a budget wig?
Usually a shinier fiber that looks more like a wig, on a basic cap. That can be the right choice if you want something easy and inexpensive, and spending more buys a more natural finish. Every wig we carry is one we would want to wear ourselves.
is a heat friendly wig more expensive?
A little. Within one style, the heat friendly version usually costs a bit more than the standard synthetic version.
how much does a lace front wig cost?
Our synthetic lace front wigs typically cost about $200 to $265. With a monofilament top as well, they usually fall between about $310 and $440.
how much does a monofilament wig cost?
A monofilament top typically puts a synthetic wig at about $240 to $330. Most of our monofilament wigs also have a lace front, and with both they usually fall between about $310 and $440.
how much does a human hair wig cost?
Ours typically run from about $570 to $1,550 and up, and the most expensive go past $3,600. The length, the grade of the hair (Remy hair, sorted so the strands run one direction, costs more) and the cap all move the price.
is a human hair wig worth the cost?
It depends on how long you'll wear a wig and how you want to style it. Our human hair vs synthetic guide walks through it.
why are human hair wigs so expensive?
The hair itself is limited in supply, Remy hair takes extra sorting so the strands all run the same direction, and hand-tied caps take more handwork. Each of those adds cost. Our human hair vs synthetic guide compares the two fibers side by side.
are wigs cheaper online than in a store?
Often, yes. A shop's price usually includes in-person service, so the same wig can cost less online. Compare the final price, the return policy and the help that comes with the wig.
why are wigs cheaper at outlet stores?
Outlet prices can come from overstock or discontinued styles, and many outlet wigs are refurbished: returns that were worn, then washed and put back on sale. A worn wig can't be resold as new, so it sells for less. Check whether a wig is new or refurbished, and the return policy, before you buy.
why are some wigs so cheap online?
Many are budget wigs, with a shinier fiber and a basic cap. If a designer wig costs far less there than it usually sells for, it may be a knockoff or a refurbished return.
how can I tell if a designer wig is real?
Buy it from a retailer the brand has authorized. Many wig brands list their authorized retailers on their own websites, so check the list before you buy. Headcovers is an authorized retailer for every brand we carry.
will insurance pay for a wig?
Some plans do, when the wig is for medical hair loss. Call your insurer before you buy, then see our wig insurance guide. We can give you an invoice for your claim.
what costs less than a full wig?
Bangs worn under a hat or scarf, hair halos, headband wigs and baseball caps with hair. Our bangs cost under $20, our short, bob and long halos around $45, Cardani headband wigs around $70, and baseball caps with hair about $95 to $105. And some women find a soft hat more comfortable than hair of any kind.
can I get a wig for free?
Some programs give wigs free to women in treatment. Our guide to free wigs for cancer patients lists them and how to reach each one.
A price question we didn't answer? Tell us. We want to hear from you.
why we care about this
In 1990 my mother Carol went through breast cancer treatment and could not find anything comfortable or attractive to wear. She was a hairstylist, and she promised herself that if she came through it she would fix that for the women who came after her. In 1995 she and I started Headcovers together.
Price should never be the reason a woman goes without. So we publish our real prices, taken from the wigs our customers buy, and we point you to free and low-cost options as readily as to our own wigs. If you aren't sure where your money is best spent, call us and a person will talk the options through with you.
Whatever you can spend, you deserve to feel pretty and like yourself again. Keep an open mind: there are so many cute options that aren't wigs at all, and a little thinking outside the box can get you to a look you love.
