Types of Hair Pieces: Clip-In Bangs, Ponytails, Buns and More

A bun in a minute, a fuller ponytail, bangs without the haircut, length for one evening or for every day. Learn what each kind of hair piece does, how it holds on, and how to choose one that looks like your own hair.

Change your hair the way you change your earrings: for an evening, for a season, or just to see.

A hair piece is hair you add to your own. Most clip, comb or wrap onto the hair you have; a few sit on a headband or under a hat, for when there is little hair to attach to. Nothing is glued or sewn in, and nothing gets cut. It goes on in the morning, comes off at night, and waits in its box until you want it again.

The names are the confusing part. Hair piece, hairpiece, wiglet, topper, fall, half wig, chignon: brands use them loosely, and one company’s wiglet is another company’s topper. So we sort them by job, by where the piece sits on your head and what it is there to do.

what you need decides the piece

A topper covers where your hair has thinned

Want a different style, length or fullness from the hair you have? Hair wraps, buns, ponytails, clip-in bangs and extensions do that. Where your hair has thinned, a topper gives coverage. And if there is not enough hair to clip into yet, a headband wig or hair made to wear under a hat needs none.

The pieces our customers buy most go on like an accessory: a scrunchie wrap around a bun, a ponytail on a headband, a fall or a full wig on a headband. Each takes seconds, with no clips to place.

hair wraps, buns and updo wigs

for an updo in a minute

Updo wigs, buns and hair wraps are the hair accessories that do the updo for you. The hard part of a good bun, the volume and the texture, comes already done, so all you supply is a small ponytail or knot to attach it to.

hair wraps and buns

Most bun hair pieces and hair wraps are a ready-made tousle of hair on an elastic, a scrunchie with hair attached. Make a small bun or ponytail, wrap the piece around it, and tuck in the ends. Others clip on with a comb or a claw clip. The one our customers buy most is the Playful Hair Wrap by Jon Renau, a small ring of 2.5-inch curls that twists on like an elastic and weighs less than an ounce. Our own Natural Hair Wrap Scrunchie by Cardani is the messy-bun kind. For coily or textured hair, the Coily Wrap by Hairdo is 7 inches of tight, springy coils on the same kind of elastic.

A bun or wrap isn’t only for an easy day. Wound around a neat bun, it makes a polished updo for a wedding or an evening out.

Tousled wraps are forgiving to match. The texture blurs the line between your hair and the piece, so a shade close to yours is usually close enough.

Not sure which you would wear most? The 3 Piece Hair Piece Kit by Toni Brattin holds a twist wrap, a pouf and a ponytail clip: three looks from one color choice.

what is an updo wig?

An updo wig is a ready-made updo: a bun, a chignon, a twist or a cluster of curls, already styled, that clips onto your own hair. It’s what our customers call them, and you’ll also see them sold as clip-in updo hair pieces. It covers only the spot where the updo sits, so the hair around it is yours and the updo is done for you. Ours come pre-styled, as sleek chignons, curly buns and twists, in synthetic and heat-friendly fiber, and some come with matching bangs.

Most clip over a small bun or twist of your own hair with a claw clip, which anchors the piece for the evening. A few use combs and a drawstring, or an elastic that wraps around your bun. That small anchor of your own hair is all an updo wig needs, so you need enough length to gather some at the back. If you’re not sure you have it, the clip test will tell you.

A chignon is a bun at the nape, sleek or loose; a curly bun adds texture and a little drama. The Modern Chignon by Hairdo is a loose, softly waved chignon; the Pin Up by Tony of Beverly is a low bun of soft curls. Some updo wigs are styled loosely enough to wear more than one way, as a ponytail, a messy bun or a tucked chignon.

This is the piece for an occasion. Updo wigs for a wedding, a gala or a night out give you a ready-styled updo you can put on at home. Our guide to wedding hair pieces has ideas for the day.

headband wigs, half wigs, falls and extensions

for length and fullness all over

When you want more hair all over, there are three ways to get it. A headband wig gives you a full head of hair on a soft band. A half wig or fall adds a full head of hair from the crown back, with your own hairline left out in front. Extensions add length and thickness under your own hair.

headband wigs

A headband wig is a full wig attached to a soft, stretchy headband. You slide it on like any headband. Wear the band at your hairline for full coverage, or set it further back and let your own hair show in front, the way a half wig does. A scarf or a colorful headband tied over the black band changes the look.

Our own Cardani headband wigs are the ones our customers buy most: Hannah, a bob; Brandi, shoulder-length beach waves; Camille, long layers in heat-friendly fiber; and Emma, a long bob in heat-friendly fiber.

half wigs and falls

A half wig, also called a fall or a 3/4 wig, is a partial cap with hair attached. It sits from the crown to the nape, held with combs and a stretch cap, while a strip of your own hair stays out in front and blends over the edge. You get a full head of hair that starts at your real hairline.

Because your own hair shows at the front, match the texture as closely as the color. The Headband Fall Wavy by Toni Brattin is 18 inches of heat-friendly waves on a black satin headband, so the band covers the join for you. It is the fall our customers buy most. On a fall without one, a headband or scarf across the join is an easy finish. Our blog post what is a half wig? goes further.

clip-in hair extensions

Clip-in hair extensions are wefts, strips of hair sewn to a narrow band with small clips along it. You section your hair, clip the wefts in rows from the nape upward, and let your top layer fall over them. Sets cover a full head; a single piece adds thickness where you want it. The 20″ 10 Piece Human Hair Extension Kit by Hairdo gives you ten wefts, 3 to 8 inches wide, to lay in rows. A one-piece extension, like the 23″ Wavy Hair Extensions by Hairdo, puts 23 inches of heat-friendly waves on a single 11-inch-wide base, so there is one piece to clip in instead of rows. A halo-style piece, like the 20″ Invisible Hair Extensions by Hairdo, goes on in one piece under your top layer and holds with an invisible stretch band instead of clips. This kind of halo blends beneath your own hair; a halo for hats is different, giving you hair at the sides and back under headwear.

Our guide to putting in hair extensions walks through it step by step.

clip-on ponytails

for length and swing

A clip-on ponytail goes over a ponytail you have already made. Pull your hair back, secure it with an elastic, and the piece attaches over the top, hiding the elastic and adding whatever length, curl or fullness your own hair doesn’t have. If your hair will gather into a ponytail, even a short one, you can usually wear one, as long as there is enough hair there to carry its weight.

how they hold on

claw clip

A hinged clip with teeth that closes over your ponytail. The fastest on and off, and easy to move if it sits too high or too low.

comb and drawstring

A comb slides into your hair above the ponytail, then a drawstring pulls the piece snug around it. A firm hold for long, heavy pieces.

wrap

A strip of hair wraps around the base of your ponytail and fastens underneath, so the wrap hides the elastic as part of the style.

Some pieces give you two. The Foxy Clip On Pony by Jon Renau, 20 inches of curls, has a claw comb and an optional drawstring base, so you can use either. So does the Classy Clip On Pony by Jon Renau, 5 inches of ringlets you can wear as a curly ponytail or, on the drawstring base, as a bun. The 12″ Simply Straight Pony by Hairdo is the wrap kind: 12 inches of straight, heat-friendly hair with a strip that wraps the base and closes with hook-and-loop.

The Rampage and Crush Clip On Ponies by Jon Renau have both too.

what you can do with one

  • Add length you haven’t grown. A shoulder-length cut can wear a ponytail that swings well past the shoulders.
  • Change the texture for a night. Straight hair can wear a curly ponytail and the reverse, because only the piece shows below the elastic.
  • Give a fine ponytail more body. The piece surrounds your own, so the finished ponytail is as full as the piece.
  • Wear bangs and a ponytail together. Some ponytails come as a set with a matching fringe, so the whole look changes with two pieces.
Fine hair? Start shorter. Your own ponytail carries the weight of the piece, and long, full ponytails weigh the most. A shorter or lighter piece sits more comfortably and stays put. Check the item weight on the product page.

clip-in bangs and hair headbands

for the front of your hair

Clip-in bangs are a fringe on a small base with clips underneath. You clip the base into your hair just behind the hairline, comb your own hair back over it, and the fringe falls forward as if you had cut it. They are the easiest way to find out whether bangs suit you, and the easiest way back if they don’t.

  • Try bangs before you cut them. Wear them a few times before deciding whether to cut your own.
  • Frame your face. A fringe draws attention to your eyes and cheekbones.
  • Dress up an evening. Clip them in for a party and take them out before bed.
  • Skip the trims. Real bangs grow into your eyes and need regular cutting. Clip-ins stay the length you bought.

choosing a fringe

Shape. Blunt and full, soft and wispy, or long and side-swept, which you can push aside on days you want your forehead back. The Clip In Bangs by Hairdo are the straight, full kind, with a 5-inch fringe; the Modern Fringe Clip In Bangs by Hairdo is lighter and more piecey.

Sides. A fringe with longer side pieces blends into your own hair at the temples. The Wispy Bang by Toni Brattin is built this way, with a light, piecey front.

Fiber. Heat-friendly synthetic can be curved or straightened with low heat. Human hair, like the Human Hair Bangs by Raquel Welch on a monofilament base, styles like your own.

A stylist can thin or shorten any fringe to suit your face. It never grows, so the trim lasts.

If your hair is thinning at the top as well, the Big Bangs Topper by Envy is part bang, part topper: wispy bangs on a 7.5 by 7 inch base that also covers the top and crown. It blends best with hair at chin length or shorter.

hair headbands

A hair headband is a braid on a band. It sits across the top of your head where any headband would, your own hair falls behind it, and you get a braided crown without doing any braiding. Our own Headband Braid by Cardani goes on like any headband, with your hair down or pulled back. Our Ponytail Headband puts a ponytail on a soft, stretchy band instead, made to wear under a baseball cap.

bangs to wear with a hat or scarf

Clip-in bangs need hair to clip into. Under a hat or scarf on a bare or nearly bare head, the bangs attach to the headwear instead. Our bangs for hats come in three kinds: the Ultimate Fringe, which our co-founder Carol Galland designed; human hair bangs; and the heat-friendly Perfect Style Fringe, which you can restyle with low heat. We designed the Instant Hair Headband to hold any of the three, so the same bangs move from one hat to the next. Press them in at the front for a fringe, at the back for length at the nape, or both.

Bangs take care of the front. For hair at the sides and back, under the brim, a halo from our hats with hair collection sits inside the hat and leaves the front to the bangs. For a ponytail under a baseball cap, our Ponytail Headband puts one on a soft, stretchy band that sits beneath the cap. Our hats with hair guide covers halos and caps with hair in full.

hair toppers

for thinning at the part or crown

A hair topper is the hair piece built for coverage. It is hair on a base, often with a monofilament top that looks like scalp where it parts, and it clips into your own hair at the part or crown so the hair around it blends in. If your part has widened or your crown has thinned, this is the piece made for it.

If you are thinking about a first topper, you don’t have to wait until your thinning gets worse.

finding the right one

Toppers come in synthetic and human hair, with bases from a small piece for the part to a large one for the whole top of the head. Some brands call the small ones wiglets, and what is a wiglet? explains the name. Our hair topper buying guide covers base size and measuring, and wigs vs. hair toppers helps if you are deciding between the two. To choose, match the base to the area that needs coverage, make sure the clips reach fuller hair around it, and pick a length and texture that blend with your haircut. Our best sellers run from short to long: the New Addition by Rene of Paris, the Pouf Positive by Envy, our own Short Integrated Topper by Cardani, the Essentially You by Jon Renau and the EasiPart HD 12″ by Jon Renau.

when there isn’t enough hair to clip into

Clips need hair to hold. If your hair is very short, growing back after chemotherapy, or fine right where a clip would sit, a clip may slide there. Moving it to fuller hair nearby often helps, and for a topper, a larger base can put the clips past the thinning area, onto hair that can hold them.

The clip test. Open a clip, slide it into your hair where the piece would sit, and close it. If it slips out with a gentle tug, try another spot or a larger base. A clip that holds still has to carry the weight of the whole piece, so a heavier piece needs more hair than a light one. The piece should feel secure without pulling. If it hurts or tugs, take it off and check the fit.

Until there is, hats with hair work at every stage, including while your hair grows back (our hats with hair guide explains how they work), and a wig gives you a full head of hair whenever you want one. All of these are good answers, and so is waiting.

matching a hair piece to your own hair

color, fiber and shine

A hair piece looks like yours when three things line up: the color, the texture and the shine. Length and style are the fun part. These three help it blend with your own hair.

color

Match the piece to the hair it will sit beside. Bangs sit at your hairline, so match the front, gray and all. A ponytail or bun sits against the ends of your own ponytail, and ends are often lighter than roots. Rooted shades, darker at the base and lighter through the length, blend easily because real hair is rarely one color. If you fall between two shades, a blend with a little of each will usually sit better than either solid color.

Hair piece colors use the same codes as wigs. Our guide to decoding wig colors explains the letters and numbers, and how to choose a wig color applies to pieces too. Color matching is free: send us a cutting of your hair and we will match it. Still unsure? Call us at 1-800-264-4287 and our team can help you choose.

texture

Match the wave to your own hair. A straight piece beside wavy hair shows where it begins, and so does a curly piece beside straight hair. If your hair falls between textures, heat-friendly synthetic and human hair can be curled or straightened to meet it; standard synthetic keeps the texture it came with.

Our guide to human hair vs. synthetic goes into the differences in depth.

shine

A brand-new synthetic piece is at its shiniest the day it arrives. A few washes and ordinary wear soften the shine, and a light dusting of a dry shampoo made for synthetic hair, used as its label directs, tones it down in the meantime.

putting it on

Brush out tangles where the piece will sit.

Clips close cleanly in smooth hair.

Give each clip something to hold.

A little backcombing at the roots where a clip will go helps it grip, especially in fine or silky hair.

Open, slide, close.

Open each clip, slide its teeth into your hair toward the scalp, and press it shut.

Cover the base.

Comb your own hair over the base or band, then check the sides and back with a hand mirror.

Open every clip before you take it out.

Unclip first, then lift. Pulling on a closed clip tugs your hair along with it.

If you can gather your hair into a small bun, the Natural Hair Wrap Scrunchie by Cardani is an easy first piece: it goes on in a minute and is forgiving to match. Every other style is in our hair pieces collection.

questions about hair pieces

open the one you need
what is the difference between a hair piece and a wig?

A wig covers your whole head. A hair piece adds to the hair you have: a fringe, a ponytail, length or fullness. A topper is the hair piece made for coverage, sitting over the top of your head and blending with your own hair around it. An updo wig is one kind of hair piece: a ready-made updo that clips onto your own hair.

are hair pieces only for women with hair loss?

No. Most clip-in pieces are styling pieces, worn by women who want bangs, length or a quick updo without changing their own hair. Toppers are the pieces made for thinning hair.

can I wear a hair piece if my hair is thinning?

Yes, with the right piece. Ponytails, buns and bangs clip into your own hair, so if your hair is fine, choose lighter, shorter pieces and place the clips where your hair is fullest. If the thinning is at the part or crown, a hair topper is the piece made for it.

can I wear a hair piece while my hair grows back after chemo?

Once there is enough hair for a clip to hold, yes. Try the clip test: open a clip, slide it in where the piece would sit, close it, and give it a gentle tug. If it slips out, try another spot or, for a topper, a larger base. If nothing holds yet, give your hair a little longer. Until then, a headband wig, hats with hair and bangs for hats give you hair without clipping into your own.

how do I match a hair piece to my hair color?

Match it to the hair it will sit beside: your hairline for bangs, the ends of your ponytail for ponytails and buns. Rooted and blended shades are the easiest to match. Send us a cutting of your hair and we will match the color for free; if you are between two shades, call us and our team can help you choose.

can I curl or straighten a hair piece?

If it is human hair or heat-friendly synthetic, yes, up to the temperature listed on its product page. Heat-friendly fiber can frizz, so go gently. Standard synthetic keeps the style it came with, and heat will damage it.

how do I wash a clip-in hair piece?

For a synthetic piece: cool water and a wig shampoo, such as Brandywine Non-Static Wig Shampoo. Swish it gently without rubbing, rinse, press the water out in a towel, and let it air dry. Finger-comb curly pieces; a brush pulls the curl apart. It dries back into its style, and our synthetic wig care guide covers the details. Human hair pieces are washed differently, and some should not be soaked, so follow the care instructions on the product page.

how do I store a hair piece?

Out of direct sun, in its box or a hair net, so it doesn’t tangle with everything else in the drawer. Long ponytails and falls keep their shape best on a wig stand.

can I sleep in a clip-in hair piece?

Take it out at night. Clips are uncomfortable to sleep on, and the piece tangles against the pillow.

do you carry hair pieces for men?

Yes. Men’s toppers and hairpieces are in our men’s wigs collection.

why we care about this

specialists in hair loss since 1995

In 1990 my grandmother Carol went through breast cancer treatment and could not find anything comfortable or attractive to wear. She was a hairstylist, and she promised herself that if she came through it she would fix that for the women who came after her. In 1995 she and my mother started Headcovers together.

The last thing she designed was a hair piece. While my mother sat with her during one of her last infusions, my grandmother sketched a headband with a ponytail attached, to wear under a baseball cap. It was about five years before my mother could bring herself to finish it. It is our Ponytail Headband now.

It is a small thing, a ponytail on a headband. Most hair pieces are. You put one on in the morning, stop thinking about your hair, and get on with your day.
