Do I Need a Wig Cap?
It depends on your situation. For most women, the answer is yes. Once you find the right one, you won't go back.
Most women spend a lot of time choosing the right wig. The cap is an afterthought. It shouldn't be.
Whether you need a wig cap, and which kind, comes down to your situation. Here's the honest answer for each one.
Going through hair loss
Yes. A cap matters more here than anywhere else. When you have no hair, the wig cap sits directly against bare skin all day. Without it, you get friction, shifting, and sweat absorbing into the wig itself. A good cap makes the difference between a wig that feels wearable and one you dread putting on. It also protects your wig. Oils and sweat that soak into the cap wash out easily. They don't wash out of a wig the same way.
Fashion wig wearer
Technically optional, but most women who try one don't go back. A cap tucks hair in cleanly, keeps the wig from shifting, and absorbs oils and sweat before they reach the wig. Wigs worn without a cap regularly come back to us in noticeably worse condition. If you want your wig to last, a cap is the simplest thing you can do.
You run hot or have hot flashes
This is the one situation where skipping the cap is a reasonable choice. A wig already adds warmth, and another layer doesn't help. That said, a breathable cap can actually improve things: it wicks moisture away from your scalp faster than a wig cap alone. If you've tried a cap and found it too warm, the answer is usually a different cap, not no cap.
We've spent 31 years helping women find the right fit for their situation. Below is everything we know about choosing the right cap.
Why Most Women Wear One
Oils, sweat, and skin cells wash out of a cap easily. They don't wash out of a wig the same way. A cap takes the daily wear so your wig doesn't have to.
A cap gives your wig something to grip. Without one, you're relying on the wig's interior construction alone. With one, there's friction between layers that keeps everything from shifting.
Hair that isn't tucked in shows through, shifts the wig, and creates bulk under the cap. A wig cap keeps everything flat and in place so the wig sits the way it's supposed to.
The inside of a wig cap can be scratchy, especially on a bare or sensitive scalp. A soft cap creates a barrier between your skin and the wig's construction, which makes a real difference over the course of a day.
Which Wig Cap Is Right for You?
Once you know you want a cap, here's how to find the right one. Start with your scalp situation.
I still have hair
You need a cap that holds your hair securely inside without bulk, stays breathable, and keeps short strands from poking through.
I have no hair
You want a cap that's gentle on bare skin, keeps the wig from shifting, and stays comfortable all day.
My scalp is sensitive
During or after chemotherapy, scalp skin can be reactive. Our softest options, aloe and bamboo, provide the gentlest feel against tender skin.
I want natural materials only
Some women going through treatment want nothing synthetic touching their scalp. Certified organic cotton is the purest option we carry: soft, breathable, and completely natural.
I run hot or have hot flashes
Wigs add warmth. A moisture-wicking cap helps significantly, and some women find it's the main thing that makes wearing a wig workable.
My wig slips
A cap with a built-in silicone gripper strip adds friction without adhesive. Or go one step further with our two-in-one option.
I want cap and grip in one
Our No-Slip Grip Cap combines a bamboo wig cap with a built-in velour gripper band. One piece, no extra step.
Wig Cap Types: Which One Is Right for You?
Every cap we carry is chosen or designed with this specific customer in mind. Here's what makes each one different.
Mesh Wig Cap
Finely woven nylon mesh made specifically for us in Korea. It holds existing hair securely inside the cap without bulk, breathes well, and has elastic at the hairline for security. Our most popular cap for women who still have hair.
Organic Cotton Wig Cap
For women who want nothing synthetic touching their scalp, this is the answer. Genuinely 100% certified organic cotton. Soft, breathable, and naturally absorbent, with contoured seams, a silicone gripper strip, and tagless construction. If material purity matters to you, this is the one.
Bamboo Wig Cap
One of our softest caps. The silky bamboo viscose feels gentle against even the most sensitive bare scalp, stays cool and moisture-wicking all day, and never itches. Contoured seams, a silicone gripper strip, and flat no-itch construction. A go-to for women who run hot or wear their wig all day.
Aloe Vera Wig Cap
Our softest cap. Real aloe vera fibers woven into the bamboo blend, not a coating that washes out, so the soothing properties never fade. The gentlest option we make, designed specifically for scalps that are reactive, tender, or at their most sensitive during treatment.
No-Slip Grip Cap
A Headcovers original, not available anywhere else. Soft bamboo wig cap with a built-in velour gripper headband that holds your wig in place without adhesive. Designed by Danielle to combine cap comfort and gripper security in one piece.
Worn as a liner under any hat, scarf, or headwrap, a wig cap absorbs oils and sweat before they reach the fabric. Your headwear stays fresher longer, needs washing less often, and simply lasts longer. The cap takes the brunt of daily wear so your wig, hat, or scarf doesn't have to.
Many women who wear headwear every day, with or without a wig, keep a few caps on rotation as a matter of routine. It's one of those small things that makes a real difference once you start doing it.

What Makes Our Wig Caps Different
Generic wig caps are built to a price. Ours are built around a specific customer: someone wearing headwear every day, often with a sensitive scalp, who needs it to actually work. Here's what that means in practice.
Our Deluxe caps have a silicone strip sewn along the interior hairline that creates friction against the scalp. The cap stays where you put it. Most generic caps rely on elastic alone, which stretches and loses grip over time.
The seams in our Deluxe caps are designed to follow the curve of the head, not cut across it. No pressure points, no itching, no bulk. Generic caps have straight seams that sit awkwardly and can irritate sensitive scalps.
Our bamboo and aloe caps are our softest options. Our organic cotton cap is for women who want nothing synthetic touching their scalp: still soft, but purity is the priority. A lot of caps marketed as "organic" or "bamboo" are blended with synthetics or mislabeled. Ours are certified and exactly what they say they are.
Danielle designed these caps for women going through chemotherapy and other hair loss conditions. Every decision: the material, the seam placement, the silicone strip, was made with a sensitive scalp in mind. That's a different design brief than a generic fashion wig cap.
How to Care for Your Wig Cap
Wig caps absorb oils, sweat, and product from your scalp and your wig. Regular washing keeps them effective and hygienic.
Every 3 to 5 wears for most women. More frequently if you sweat heavily or wear the cap all day in warm weather.
Hand wash cold or machine wash cold on the delicate cycle. Use a gentle detergent. Never wring. Press out excess water in a towel.
Dry flat at room temperature. Never put a wig cap in the dryer. Heat breaks down elastic and silicone strips faster.
When the elastic loses stretch or the cap no longer holds its shape. Most caps last several months with regular washing and proper drying.
