Choosing the right wig color can be a challenge.  If you've never worn a wig before, our large selection of color codes can be overwhelming.  Please remember that we are here to help. 

We have included color swatches on our site to give you a general idea of color.  Please keep in mind that the actual wig color can vary from what you see on your screen.  Due to individual monitor settings and scanning techniques, it is not possible to provide an exact match.  Our color swatches are a useful tool that will help determine general color but they are not going to give you the best result if you have a specific color in mind.  Through years of experience, we have come up with some much better strategies to ensure customer satisfaction.  For the best possible match, view the 5 options below to determine which one is right for you.                                                                                                                 

OPTION #1 - Send us a hair swatch for FREE color matching

• Send us a hair swatch and let us choose the best possible color match for you.  This is the very best way to ensure that you will receive a color you are happy with.  The swatch can be a swatch from your current wig, a swatch of your own hair or a swatch from a friend or relative whose hair color you love.  Our cosmetologist, with years of experience in wigs and hair color, will personally select the best possible match for you.  To send us a hair swatch: 
  • Select the wig style that you would like to purchase.

  • Place your order.  You have two available methods in placing your order:

    1. Fill out our Printable Order Form and mail your order and hair swatch together in one envelope.

    2. Pre-order your wig online and enter "Sending Hair Swatch" for your color selection.  Next, send us your hair swatch via mail.  We will hold your online order and we will not charge your credit card until the hair swatch arrives.  If selecting this method, please include your order number with your hair swatch.

  • To prepare your hair swatch:

    1. On a plain, unlined white sheet of paper, write your name, address, phone number and email address, along with the wig style(s) you are ordering. If you have pre-ordered online, include your order number.  After you have prepared your hair swatch, you will be taping it to this piece of paper.

    2. Cut a section of hair that is at least 1 inch long by 1/4 inches across. If you can spare a little more, it will make our job much easier.

    3. Make sure that your hair swatch is taken from the section of your hair that you wish to match. A common mistake is taking swatches from an inconspicuous place on the head (such as hair found at the base of the neck, or hair buried underneath several layers of hair). Unfortunately, the hair in these places is DARKER than the hair in the top layers. Since most people want their wig to match the top layers of hair, it is very important to provide swatches from these areas. In short, make sure that the hair swatch you provide is representative of the color you want the wig or hairpiece to be.

    4. Mail hair swatches to:  Headcovers Unlimited, Attn: Wig Consultant, 2020C Anders Lane, Kemah, TX 77565.

    5. If we cannot provide an ideal match to your current hair color, a wig specialist will call you to discuss your options. 

Send us a picture.   Provide us with a photograph.  We will choose a color for you based on the picture. The picture can be a photograph of yourself, a photo of your favorite celebrity, a picture of a beautiful model from your favorite magazine, or a photo of a friend or relative. Any photo of someone whose hair color you wish to match is fine.  Our cosmetologist will personally choose the closest possible match to the photograph.  If there are any discrepancies, she will contact you to discuss your options. 

To send us a picture for color matching, please complete our Printable Order Form and include the photograph along with your order.  If you would like to pre-order your wig online, simple choose, "Sending Picture" for your color selection.  We will hold your order and you will not be charged until the picture arrives.  If you pre-order online, please include your name, email address and order number with your photograph.

• Let us cross reference the color to your current wig.  If you are an experienced wig wearer, you can provide us with the color and brand that you are currently wearing. We will cross match that color to any other brand we carry.  For example, if you know you are wearing 8R by Revlon, we can offer a comparable color in the Henry Margu wig that you have selected. To request a cross reference, select "Cross Reference" from the color options when you add the wig style to your cart.  Next, write a note in the comments section of our order form that includes details on your current wig. Our cosmetologist will personally choose the closest possible match to your current wig. If there are any discrepancies, she will contact you to discuss your options.

• When adding the wig style of your choice to your shopping cart, select "Consultation Requested" from the drop down color menu.  Our cosmetologist will contact you to discuss your options before your order is processed or charged. When selecting this option, it is helpful if you give us the following information in the comments section of our order from:

• Give us a detailed description of what you want. What color intensity did you have in mind? (Do you want a light brown, a medium brown, or a dark brown?) Do you want a color with ashy undertones, golden undertones, or reddish undertones? Do you want a frosted look, a highlighted look, or a monotone look?

• Browse through our on-line catalog. Without considering style, find wigs with colors that appeal to you. In the comments section of our order form, tell us which wig styles had colors that appealed to you. This will give our cosmetologist a frame of reference to work from when she contacts you.

Our specialist can usually guide you in selecting a color you are pleased with.  Please keep in mind, however, that color descriptions can be very subjective.  For this reason, we recommend options 1-3 if at all possible.  It is always better to provide us with a concrete frame of reference.  A picture (or hair swatch) is worth a thousand words.

OPTION #5 - Purchase a color ring.

• We don't encourage this method because color rings are expensive and the margin of error is large.  If you've never worn a wig, it's difficult to envision what it will look like based on a small hair sample.  In addition, color rings range from $25 - 45 per ring, depending on the wig manufacturer.  In the time it takes to receive the color ring in the mail, you could have sent in a hair swatch or a picture, without paying an additional $25 - $45 for a color ring you will never use.  Furthermore, you are much more likely to be happy with your wig color if you let our experienced professionals choose it for you.  If you would still like to order a color ring, please call us at 1-800-264-HATS and we will assist you in ordering the proper ring.
